If you planned on using the GreenON window rebate program to receive a rebate on your new windows, there is some unfortunate news: the program has been cancelled – without feedback from consumers or experts in the industry. If you’ve signed up under the initial GreenON program, you still may be able to benefit from the rebate. Here’s what you need to know.
The Initial Rebate
The GreenON program was only announced in December of 2017. It offered homeowners who were replacing their existing windows with high energy efficiency windows. Approximately $500 dollars per widow (only on qualifying windows), to a maximum of ten windows, or a total rebate of $5,000.
The GreenON program wasn’t just about replacing windows. It also offered rebates on many other products that could significantly reduce your home’s energy usage, including:
- Air source and ground source heat pumps
- Solar power
- Smart thermostats.
Like new windows, these home updates could significantly reduce your utility costs. If enough Ontarians invested in the program, it would have made the whole province a greener and more environmentally-friendly place. It’s unfortunate that the incoming provincial government has cancelled the program, but you may still be able to take advantage of it.
New Rebate Applications
If you’ve already applied for the rebate program, you will receive your rebate. If you still need to apply, the application will only be processed if you can meet all the following conditions:
- On or before June 19, 2018, you signed a contract with a participating contractor
- That replacement will be completed before October 31, 2018
- You submit your rebate application before November 30, 2018.
If you were also interested in the Smart Thermostat rebate, it has an additional condition. Now, the rebate application for the Smart Thermostat must be submitted to the manufacturer before July 31, 2018.
If you have an agreement with a participating contractor, you should get in touch with them right away to ensure they’ll be able to make the October installation deadline. Set a reminder for yourself to submit the rebate application as soon as you can after your window installation. You won’t want to miss the November deadline and lose out on the rebate!
Energy Efficient Windows
Even without the government rebate, replacing your old windows with new energy-efficient ones can still have significant benefits. In both the winter and summer, you’ll spend less on utilities getting your home to the right temperature. Furthermore, installing new, properly sealed windows can help avoid humidity problems, water damage, and other issues in your home.
